Join metroSTOR’s Refuse Chute Closure Workshop – Birmingham

Thursday 22nd May 2025 | 10:00 – 14:00
Lakeside, 4040 Solihull Parkway, Birmingham B37 7YN

The days of sending rubbish down a high-rise refuse chute are numbered. With growing concerns around fire risk, pest control, waste contamination, as well as the imminent introduction of the Simpler Recycling government legislation, housing providers are reassessing the role of refuse chutes in modern waste management.

They are outdated, unhygienic and increasingly unsafe. It’s time to act.

Join us in Birmingham at metroSTOR’s Refuse Chute Closure Workshop to hear from Adam Briggs (Citizen Housing) and other experts who’ve already led the way, tackling fire risk, improving waste services and bringing residents on board with chute decommissioning.

We’re pleased to invite housing professionals, estate teams and building safety officers to our next in-person Workshop, focused on the closure of refuse chutes in high-density housing.

This practical session will include a site visit to the nearby Hillfields Estate in Coventry, where Citizen Housing has worked closely with metroSTOR to successfully decommission refuse chutes across several residential blocks. You’ll hear directly from the teams involved in planning and delivering the project, including how they engaged residents, overcame challenges and are already seeing tangible improvements in waste management, fire safety and estate condition.

What to Expect:

The day includes a guided site tour, presentations, Q&A sessions and lunch at our Birmingham venue. You’ll come away with practical insight to help you plan your own chute closure programme with stakeholder support and resident engagement at the heart.

Key Learnings:

  1. See first-hand the outcomes of successful chute closure schemes
  2. Hear from housing and estate teams on planning, consultation and implementation
  3. Learn how to:

    • Assess waste management systems in high-rise and low-rise blocks
    • Identify and address the root causes of persistent waste issues
    • Build a strong project brief with stakeholder buy-in
    • Understand fire safety and building safety drivers for change
    • Evaluate investment options and operational impacts

Why Hillfields?

With 36 high-rise blocks across its stock, Citizen Housing is working to close chutes wherever possible as part of their building safety programme. Hillfields was chosen as a pilot due to recurring waste issues, lack of recycling and resident concerns. Following detailed engagement and support planning, metroSTOR’s fire-resistant bin housings were installed in summer 2024 and chute rooms were sealed. The results were tidier blocks, safer buildings and positive resident feedback. This success has shaped Citizen’s wider strategy, with plans now in place to roll out across their full portfolio over the next three years, with the on-going support of metroSTOR.
