How One Pilot Project Delivered Big Results in Kensington

A pilot project at Galsworthy House in Kensington & Chelsea is demonstrating how smarter waste infrastructure can dramatically improve both safety and recycling outcomes. By closing outdated waste chutes and introducing a new external system with metroSTOR bin housing, the council has transformed the way residents manage waste. The changes eliminated fire risk, noise and ongoing maintenance issues, while making recycling easier and more accessible – earning strong support from residents and delivering an immediate uplift in performance.

The results have been impressive, with recycling rates more than doubling, general waste dropped significantly, and food waste collections were successfully introduced. With over £51,000 in financial benefits and strong resident support, the project is now a scalable model for improving estates across the borough.
