How Byker Estate Improved Recycling and Reduced Fly-Tipping
A waste infrastructure upgrade on Newcastle’s Byker Estate is transforming long-standing issues with litter, fly-tipping and low recycling rates. Byker Community Trust, part of Karbon Homes, introduced enclosed communal bin stores, screened areas and expanded recycling capacity across pilot neighbourhoods. Designed with resident input, the new system focuses on easier access, clearer guidance and safer, more organised storage, replacing outdated arrangements that had led to contamination, poor cleanliness and fire safety concerns.
The impact has been rapid and measurable. From virtually no successful recycling, the pilot generated over 30,000 litres of clean recycling within six weeks, rising to more than 300,000 litres by May 2026 as resident participation increased. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with cleaner shared spaces and stronger recycling habits helping rebuild pride in the estate. The project highlights how pairing well-designed infrastructure with resident engagement can deliver lasting improvements in estate waste management.
