Webinar – New Mobility Scooter Safety Guidance for Housing Providers
How can housing providers balance accessibility and fire safety as mobility scooter use continues to rise across the UK?
In this webinar, Andy Frankum, Chair of the National Social Housing Fire Strategy Group (NSHFSG), joins Nigel Deacon from metroSTOR to discuss the updated NFCC Mobility Scooter in Residential Buildings Guidance, now open for consultation until Monday 1st December 2025.
Seven years after the original guidance was first issued, advances in battery technology, a growing number of lithium-ion related incidents and an ageing population have prompted a full review. The consultation brings forward important proposals to strengthen building safety standards and ensure that residents who rely on mobility scooters can do so safely.
This session will outline the background to the consultation, what has changed since 2018 and how the new recommendations will shape policy and design for years to come. With issues such as charging safety, evacuation routes and building layout under review, attendees will gain valuable insight into how future standards will affect housing stock, risk assessments and local management policies.
Drawing on real-world experience from both housing and fire safety perspectives, Andy and Nigel will also discuss the growing role of compliant, external storage and charging infrastructure in reducing risk and protecting residents’ independence.
