Bin storage units assist smooth implementation of waste chute closure programme

Heath Town in Wolverhampton has been undergoing a major transformation in the past couple of years, taking it from a run down estate to a fully-equipped community fit for the modern world. This multi-million pound redevelopment in Wolverhampton began with a number of redundant buildings being demolished, making way for brand new housing, refurbished, comfortable homes and state-of-the-art leisure spaces.

The project has been managed by Jacobs UK on behalf of Wolverhampton Homes. A key focus of the redevelopment was to make the area more functional and safe for residents with minimal disruption to local families and services.

As the construction work approached its completion, one of the key aspects that residents and council members wanted addressing was the failing waste management system. Bin chutes from the housing were causing problems, due to their inability to accommodate larger bin bags and the lack of recycling options available. To remedy this, Jacobs tasked United Living with sealing up the blocked bin chutes. United then approached us to help them reformulate the waste disposal system into a more convenient and sustainable form using our bin enclosures.

We manufactured and installed more than 90 metroSTOR bin enclosures outside the entrance of the housing block, providing sufficient storage capacity in safe, accessible locations. The enclosures are comprised of attractive galvanised steel finished with treated timber cladding and stainless steel trims, which gives the outside space a clean, modern appeal.

Since the project’s completion, these bespoke waste storage solutions have made a noticeable difference to the residents’ quality of life. As well as offering more attractive storage for waste, our bin enclosures accommodate larger bin bags, dramatically reducing issues such as blockages. They are also situated several metres away from the flats themselves, minimising fire risks and preventing refuse interference from vermin.

Local councils and the wider environment are also benefitting from the changes, which enables residents to separate their refuse and recycling more easily. They simply place either type in the metroSTOR PBM Bin Stores’ clearly-labelled bin apertures, without even needing to lift the lid.

The newly-revitalised Heath Town has been transformed from a run-down area of Wolverhampton to a desirable living location for families, professionals and couples alike.
