More INFODale Court, a densely populated estate in Kingston upon Thames, was facing a severe waste management crisis. Fly tipping was a daily issue, bins were frequently misplaced and recycling was virtually non-existent. RB Kingston upon Thames (RBK) introduced metroSTOR and installed a structured bin storage and recycling system. The results at Dale Court have been transformative.
READ MOREPeriods of disruption often reveal how quickly behaviour can shift when waste services falter, a pattern that could occur anywhere. When a street corner already looks like a fly-tip, it becomes far easier for individuals to justify adding to the pile. Where infrastructure or communication fails, the negative behaviours that follow can quickly become entrenched.
Food waste is a growing problem, especially in flats. With around 10.7 million tonnes of food wasted annually, 70% of it from households, efforts since 2015 have focused on voluntary industry targets, public awareness campaigns and plans to standardise waste collection. See how councils are tackling it with smart bins and better infrastructure.
