E-Bike and E-Scooter Fires: Are individual Homes at Risk?

The UK is facing a worrying spike in fires connected to lithium-ion batteries, which power e-bikes and e-scooters. The London Fire Brigade has noted a rise in incidents involving these devices. In 2018, there were just five incidents, whereas the first half of 2023 saw 91 incidents.

Lithium-fuelled fires can quickly and easily destroy a property and as such, legislation and guidance prohibiting the storage of e-devices in communal areas is clear.

However, safe behaviours regarding e-mobility batteries inside individual flats, apartments and houses is crucial.

Key considerations inside homes:

Devices should be stored and charged on hard, flat surfaces that allow heat to dissipate—avoiding soft furnishings or carpets with metroSTOR’s safe storage and charging solutions.
E-bikes and e-scooters should be kept away from flammable materials and combustible items within the home.
Charging devices overnight or while households are asleep should be discouraged.
Only manufacturer-approved chargers should be used and charging devices should not be left unattended.
Smoke alarms should be functional in storage areas and the installation of heat alarms in garages or utility rooms should be considered.
Regular inspections of batteries for damage, bulging, or unusual odours should be encouraged.
Batteries should be allowed to cool before recharging to minimise overheating risks.
Chargers and battery packs should remain uncovered during charging to prevent overheating.
Whenever feasible, devices should be stored in rooms where doors can be closed to contain potential fires.
