Designed out ASB and improved recycling in Lambeth
The Wyvil Housing Estate in Vauxhall, is one of a number across the London Borough of Lambeth that have had waste and recycling facilities upgraded as part of a rolling programme of Estate Improvement Works commissioned by the local authority.
Following an extensive resident consultation process, areas of brick-built garages that had attracted drug dealing and anti-social behaviour have been replaced by landscaped green space with new waste and recycling units forming an important feature in the regeneration scheme.
Linda Elliot, Estates Pride Programme Manager, Lambeth Council, said: “Residents wanted action to remove the anti-social behaviour and helped us to design a green landscaped area in which the metroSTOR waste and recycling units would be located”
How metroSTOR PBM has worked for residents on the Wyvil Estate:
metroSTOR PBM bin housings play a key role in changing attitudes to recycling for housing providers across the country by making this daily task less onerous for residents. Bin housings provide a complete enclosure which enables the wheeled bin to be stored with the lid in the open position at all times without loss of contents. Internal steel deflector plates ensure no overspill of waste around the bin.
With the bin lid open, residents can place their recyclable material directly into the container without touching the bin or the enclosure. Type specific loading apertures with clear wrap signage on each unit door helps to avoid cross contamination of recycling streams.
One of the primary benefits of using bin housings within a residential scheme is to keep all wheeled bins secured in a specific location and one that can be suited to user walking routes with any necessary CCTV surveillance. Without these facilities, bins will often be returned to random positions after emptying and even moved deliberately where there are ant-social behaviour issues.
Where wheeled bins are routinely serviced from parking and kerbside locations, side waste and fly tipping are challenges that are almost impossible to avoid without secure, reliable enclosure systems from metroSTOR.
One of the biggest risks from residential fires involving waste is unsecured bins. Waste materials catch alight easily, burn fiercely and generate large volumes of toxic smoke, with fires able to spread very quickly into adjacent dwellings if adequate precautions are not taken.
As a consequence, Fire Prevention bodies such as the FPA and CFPA-E state that bins should not be stored within 6m of a dwelling unless within a structure providing 30 minutes fire resistance.
metroSTOR PBM provides the safe solution for these critical challenges and can be specified with cladding providing 30 minutes fire resistance to resolve those locations where a 6m clearance cannot be achieved.
Since 2017, over 120 metroSTOR PBM bin store housings have been strategically located across the borough, helping cut fly-tipping and boost recycling rates. Linda commented: “Lambeth have been using metroSTOR units for a number of years to help design out anti-social behaviour and improve the appearance of our estates. They are an important part of our strategy to cut fly-tipping and help increase recycling, but the biggest advantage is that they are fire-rated which is of critical importance to us for some locations.”
